Wolf Dogs – Wolf Hybrids

These Wolf “Hybrids” are a cross between a Wolf and a domestic dog. Breeders often use Malamutes, German Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies to mix with the Wolf blood.

However, in 1992 scientists reclassified dogs and wolves as the same species making the term “Hybrid” obsolete. Here at “Romo’s Ranch” we still use the term “Hybrid” to recognize these wonderful Wolfdogs.

Wolf content, the number of generations removed from a pure Wolf and the type of dog used in each cross must be considered when defining a Wolfdog or “Hybrid”. Because of random genetics inherited from both the dog and the Wolf, the looks, color, and behavior can vary.

Wolfdog or Hybrids Behavior

A Wolf or Wolf Hybrid will bond very closely to its new family. It is important to spend a lot of time with your new puppy every day. Everyone in the family should do this.
Wolf Hybrids are very loving around their family, but they are different around strangers. You have to remember they are naturally shy animals. If you have them out, always have them on a leash. If you want your puppy to be more social, you need to take your puppy out to public places so that they feel more comfortable being in strange places. Let people hold the puppy when it is young so that it learns not to fear strangers as much. Let them get used to different people and different sounds as this reinforces their confidence level as they grow.
The more socialization, the better the friend….!

Wolfdogs or Hybrids do not make a watchdog. It is not in their nature to be aggressive even towards strangers. They usually just keep their distance from them. But remember they are very large and intimidating. Usually just one look at them is enough to keep someone from trying to come into your yard.

If you have other pets, you have to remember that Wolves and Wolf Hybrids are social animals. They have very complex social structure within the family. This is a good thing because they need to fit in. If you already have a pet, slowly introduce the new puppy to your dog or cat. The puppy will usually want to go right up to your pet and start showing affection. The Wolf pup will usually flop over and submit to your pet. This is a natural instinct of trying to fit in and be accepted. The Wolf Hybrid will almost always grow up seeing your other pets as part of its family.
They are however territorial towards neighbor’s dogs, cats, or strange dogs.

These are pack animals. They hate to be alone. If you cannot be with them all the time, they need a companion. This can be another Hybrid or any other type you have at home for all they care. They are very social animals and do best when they are in a pack, even if there is just one other member. While it doesn’t have to be another Hybrid to keep your Wolf pup company, if you choose to get another one,

When it comes to Children, any animal can be dangerous around young children. This is especially true when it comes to large animals. I have several small family members and kids around the house and I have never had a problem, but I also would never leave young children alone with any large dogs, Hybrid or not. This is not because of fear or aggression but it is because I know Hybrids can be large and large animals can unintentionally hurt a child just by trying to play with them.
